Services Overview

The John McGivney Children's Centre (JMCC) provides therapy and support services to the Windsor and Essex County community, enriching and celebrating the lives of children and youth with disabilities to help abilities grow by providing child focused, family-centred care. Our therapy staff includes health care professionals and support staff who work closely with the child and their family to provide assessment and treatment to meet their individual goals. Depending on need, therapy services are offered in the Centre, in community schools, in our JMCC School, in the home and at child care centres.

Centre-based Services

Centre-based services at JMCC include physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language services for children and youth who experience difficulty with everyday activities like crawling and walking, feeding, hand function and communication as well as those with developmental disabilities, orthopedic impairments, and complex chronic illnesses. Depending on the need, children or youth can receive either a single service at JMCC or they may be enrolled in multiple services. Children receiving single or multiple therapy services, and their families can also access social work.

Receiving a Single Service in Centre:

Children/youth may require only one therapy service. Our single service program offers the following services:
  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Speech and Language Pathology
  • Augmentative Communication
  • Cleft Lip & Palate Clinic
  • Seating & Mobility Clinic

Receiving multiple services in Centre:

Children/youth that require more than one therapy service attend our multi-disciplinary intake clinic and may receive the following services:
  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Speech and Language Pathology
  • Social Work
  • Seating & Mobility Clinic
Population Served: Centre-based services are offered to children and youth under the age of 19, and young people between the ages of 19 and 21 who remain in high school and reside in Windsor and Essex County. 

Location and hours of service: Centre-based services are provided at JMCC with the majority taking place Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., when the Centre is open. We also offer extended hours Monday - Thursday from 7am - 8pm and Friday from 7am - 5pm.  
 
Referrals for Service: Parents and legal guardians can refer directly for JMCC services by calling the Centre at 519-252-7281. Physicians and other professionals can also refer with parent consent. Please visit our Intake & Referrals page for more information.
 
Fees for Service: Therapy services are funded through the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services and are provided free of charge to eligible  children living in Windsor and Essex County. Fees may apply for items such as equipment, communication devices, customized seating and other non-government funded items.
 
Transfers and Discharge: Service includes developing a plan for discharge or transfer. These occur when:
  • Therapy goals are met
  • Service needs are better met by another program, provider or agency
  • The client no longer qualifies for service (moved out of Windsor and Essex County or reached 21 years of age)
  • A discharge is requested
  • JMCC is unable to contact the client
Referrals to other Services: JMCC assists families with accessing additional supports and services including:
  • Funding and financial supports
  • Respite services
  • Counselling
  • Parenting resources
  • Mental health services
  • Community supports

Community-based Services

Community-Based Services through the John McGivney Children’s Centre include physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language services for children and youth who experience difficulty with everyday activities like crawling and walking, feeding, hand function and communication as well as those with developmental disabilities, orthopedic impairments, and complex chronic illnesses. Following assessment, children and youth where it is identified that there is a home-based need or a caregiver/client is unable to travel to the Centre, will be enrolled in community-based services. Depending on the need, children or youth can receive either a single service or be enrolled in multiple services. Children receiving single or multiple therapy services, and their families can also access social work and behaviour consultation support.

Receiving a single JMCC Service in the Community:

Children/youth may require only one therapy service. Our single service program offers the following services:
  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Speech and Language Pathology
  • Augmentative Communication

Receiving multiple JMCC Services in the Community:

Children/youth that require more than one therapy service attend our multi-disciplinary intake clinic and may receive the following services:
  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Speech and Language Pathology
  • Social Work
Population Served: Our community-based services are are offered to children and youth under the age of 19, and young people between the ages of 19 and 21 who remain in secondary school and reside in Windsor and Essex County. 
 
Location and hours of service: Community-Based Services are provided in homes, child care centres, recreational programs and other community programs with the majority taking place Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Some services may be offered outside of regular business hours depending on the individual needs of the child and the availability of employees.

Services are provided free of charge to eligible children living in Windsor and Essex County, however, fees may apply for items such as equipment, communication devices, customized seating and other non-government funded items.

  • Therapy goals are met
  • Service needs are better met by another program, provider or agency
  • The client no longer qualifies for service (moved out of Windsor and Essex county or reached 21 years of age)

Services in Community Schools

Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy are offered in our area’s four publicly funded school boards by JMCC therapists. Depending on the need, children or youth can receive either a single service in their school or they may be enrolled in multiple services.
 
Population Served: Our Services in Community Schools are available to children and youth who qualify and are  registered in community elementary and secondary schools in one of the four publicly funded boards in Windsor and Essex County.
 
Location and hours of service: Services in Community Schools are provided in the child’s school, during the hours of the school day.
