Celebrating Abilities! Meet Mackenzie

February 25, 2022

Mackenzie Caradonna

Hi, my name is Mackenzie Caradonna. I am 22 years old and I am celebrating my ability by sharing my poetry. This is special to me because I didn’t realize how much of an impact sharing my perspective of being dependent on an electric wheelchair would have on people. A fun fact about what I am sharing is that in the process of writing this poem I came across a video of myself learning to drive my first electric wheelchair at a very young age. It inspired me to write the line in the poem about how there is no me without you or you without me because using a wheelchair to get around is all I’ve ever known.

People notice you before me,

You’re just my electric shadow but you have so much power over me,

You make me question if I am worthy of love, which I don’t understand because you are just my electric shadow,

You give me freedom that I am very thankful for but I despise the fact that freedom is not possible without having an electric shadow,

There is no me without you or you without  me,

If we are a part you are only a few feet away,

There are times I am free of you like when I lie in bed sleeping and my dreams take me places where you have no power,

I am not you for you are not me, my electric shadow is powerless when all I see is me!
