June 17, 2025

Update on Canada Disability Benefit Reulations

The Canada Disability Benefit (CDB)—a major federal initiative to reduce poverty and promote financial security for persons with disabilities—has officially moved forward.

As of May 15, 2025, the Canada Disability Benefit Regulations are in force, and the benefit will soon be available to eligible applicants.

What is the Canada Disability Benefit?

The CDB offers up to $200 per month in financial support for people with disabilities who have low income. To qualify, individuals must:

  • Be between the ages of 18 and 64, and
  • Meet specific eligibility criteria, including approval for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC).
The benefit is administered by Service Canada, and the first month of eligibility is June 2025. Payments will begin in July 2025 for those whose applications are received and approved by June 30, 2025.

If an individual’s application is approved after July, they will still receive back payments for any months they were eligible starting in June.

When and How to Apply
Applications open on June 20, 2025. You cannot apply before this date.

Applications can be submitted:
  • Online through the official portal
  • By phone
  • In person at a Service Canada Centre
What You Need to Apply
If you are already approved for the Disability Tax Credit and meet most eligibility criteria, you may receive a letter from Service Canada starting in June with:
  • A unique application code
  • Step-by-step instructions on how to apply
Before applying, be sure to gather:
  • Your Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • Direct deposit banking information (recommended for faster payments)
If you do not receive a letter but believe you qualify, you can still apply. In this case, you will also need:
  • Your mailing address
  • Your 2024 net income (line 23600 from your Notice of Assessment)
Extra Help is Available
To ensure the benefit reaches those who need it most, community-based navigator services are being funded to support individuals—especially those in underserved communities—with the application process. Service Canada is also conducting outreach to organizations across the country to raise awareness and offer information sessions.
