12 Days of Stories: Meet Maya

December 9, 2021

“We were introduced to the amazing staff at JMCC prior to the birth of our daughter, when we discovered she wouldn’t be the typical newborn. Our daughter was born with a rare genetic syndrome, and with 3 other children at home we didn’t know how we were going to manage all of the different feelings and stress we would face, and we were scared of the road ahead.  After meeting the first person who would be on Maya’s team, Tonia Bryans (cleft palate team) in the NICU, we knew we were in great hands. The first thing she did for our family was giving us a children’s illustrated book to prepare our children at home for Maya’s arrival, and is something we are forever grateful for. The children still bring the book out to read to their friends. Tonia worked with the doctors at the Children’s Hospital in London to ensure Maya was set up for all the necessary appointments for the long road ahead. Tonia wanted to take away any additional stress, so she would come visit us in our home, set up zoom meets or in person -  whatever worked best for our busy life. We were then introduced to Jessica Larkin (social worker) who provided us with information on government grants and local programs, giving us a sense of relief that we are not the only parents who are dealing with a difficult situation. Maria Kmet (Occupational Therapist) also follows Maya to ensure she is reaching her milestones and is committed to working closely with everyone to assist in any way possible. We were introduced to Christine Kipping (Physiotherapist) when Maya was just practicing tummy time, and a year later Maya is reaching her goals and has proven that nothing will hold her back. Christine continues to connect us with local doctors, as well as doctors in London to help with Maya’s development so there are no delays. Most recently when Maya was around 8 months old, we met Nancy Holmes (Speech-Language Pathologist) and we conduct zoom meets to discuss unilateral hearing loss and what we can do as a family to help Maya develop the vocabulary she needs as we grows. One year and 19 doctors/specialists later, we couldn’t have done all we have to support Maya’s growth and development without the help of JMCC.  This is a Centre I turn to often for help, answers and assistance. Prior to Maya, we had no idea the amount of local support there is in Windsor and this is something that we are very thankful for. We have no doubt in our minds that with the JMCC team, and all the knowledge they bring, Maya will achieve all of her goals and continue to prove to this fierce world, she is fighter. Thank you JMCC for everything you do for our family, and all the families that are part of your programs. The children will excel because of your continued dedication.”  – Amanda, mom
