What is Augmentative and Alternative Communication?
Our Augmentative Communication Clinic supports children and youth who have severe speech or language challenges, or who find it hard to use a pen or pencil, by helping them find alternative other ways to communicate.
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) uses tools and strategies to make everyday communication easier. AAC can supplement or replace spoken or written words and may include speech, a shared glance, text, gestures, facial expression, touch, sign language, symbols, pictures, or speech-generating devices. These tools give children and youth ways to share their thoughts, needs, feelings, and wants in everyday life.
Our team works closely with children, youth, and families to understand their communication needs and recommend strategies or equipment tailored to each person’s situation.
